Reading is the key to a better society. It allows people to communicate many different ways without verbal communication. Without the knowledge of being able to read, the world would be at almost a complete standstill because no one would be able to know what the other person is saying in a letter, a list of instructions, or even a stop sign. Therefore, there are many different uses for reading such as: pleasure, education, jobs, traffic situations, parenting, and college. Starting with pleasure, millions of people read for their enjoyment. They enjoy reading because it allows their mind to picture what the author is trying to make people visualize from the story. Reading also enables everyone to get creative with his or her own imagination and come up with his or her own ideas for stories, illustrations, and books. Without that imagination and creativity, there would not be a lot of books available to read for all ages because most books came from any one persons's mind. Next, millions of students need to know how to read, so that they can read what the author what to say. Reading is an activity that entails more than the mere following of words on a page. Indeed, reading is an art: it involves the mental processing of plot, characterisation and how these aspects come together to convey the intentions of the author. It is also an appreciation of the power of language employed by the author, for language should complement the thematic concerns of the writer. Further, crucial to the definition of reading as an art, is that it must be a pleasurable event, for literature is by its very nature intellectually and emotionally stimulating.It is said that exercise is important for our body because it helps us feel relaxed, full of energy and healthy. On the other hand, reading is important for us, too as it gives a lot of advantages to a person and it is like a source to feed our mind.
Firstly, it can help us explore worlds we don't know: we can travel into the past, in the times of Queen Elizabeth or Shakespeare. We can find out how people used to live, how they used to dress and which were their prejudices and values. Then, we can read about the future and science fiction books can offer us an interesting point of view on this matter. The world of books, magazines, newspapers and so on offers us a large variety of areas we can explore and come to understand. It is like a way of escaping from real life as it allows us to travel to places we might not ever get to go to in real life.
Secondly, reading is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. When one enjoys reading a book he is captivated of what he is reading and he hardly takes a break. He wants to finish it very rapidly because he is very curious to find out what will happen till the end. That is why he feels relaxed, excited and tries to somehow participate in the book’s action. Then, think of the knowledge one can obtain with reading: he’d be able to take part in dialogues on certain subjects concerning history or science, for example. He’d feel proud of himself to give others some information they have no idea about.
